About The Drawings

My mother likes to tell the story of how, when I was just 3 years old, I drew a detailed picture of a battle ship on the wall.  She left it there, refusing to clean up the little master piece drawn by her daughter.  I can't say I know what happened to the natural ability for drawing I displayed at such a young age.  I remember drawing all the time when I was younger.  I even took art classes in college.  And my Aunt, who paints beautiful pictures, took me under her wing for a time, and gave me lessons in oil painting.

I suppose, it's like anything else we lose along the way, as our lives, and our focus, are drawn away from the magic of youth, and our artistic expressions, to the "more important grown up things."  Or perhaps, it's because I never thought I was any good at it.  I couldn't get it perfect.

Now I know it was never about the finished product, or even perfection, but more about the process itself.  Drawing again has brought me a sense of that magical wonder I had as a child.  Free from the fret of perfection, I can lose myself in the process, and simply play with colors.  And in so doing, I find myself surprised by the finished image that greets me.  I sit in wonder, and find myself asking, "How did that happen?"

They may be basic drawings, yet I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment after my play is done.  Perhaps I'll get better with more practice.  Make my lines a bit more bold.  Risk putting it all out there.  I don't know.  For now, I'm just happy I'm drawing again.

Right now, my drawings are done in colored pencil and ink.  I like the idea of using ink as a highlight.  My ink pen and ink were a gift to me from my roommate.  It's a gorgeous blue and white pen, made of flame worked glass, the kind I have to dip into ink.  Go check out the craftsman's shop who makes them, Jnagadhana, on Etsy.  The ink I'm using right now is Butterfly's Blood/Saffron Ink from Alchemy Works.  The pencils are just your run of  the mill colored pencils I bought on sale from Michaels Craft Store.

I hope you enjoy my drawings as much as I enjoy drawing them.
